The number of IMGs who obtained their medical training at schools in the Caribbean has increased steadily over the past 20 years. (An average of 28% for each five-year interval compared to an average increase of 18% for the same period for IMGs from all nations.) Often referred to as "off-shore" schools, medical schools in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean train a significant number of
US-born IMGs.

In 1986 the number of IMGs who trained in Cuba dropped, a trend that continued through 2001. The number of IMGs from Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, and Montserrat increased significantly.
In 1991 the number of IMGs who had attened medical school in Mexico, the Dominican Repbulic, and Colombia continued to increase while the number from Cuba continued to decrease.
A significant number of IMGs attended medical school Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, and Colombia in 1996. Again, the number who trained in Cuba decreased.
Between 1996 and 2001 the number of IMGs who trained in Grenada and Dominica increased sharply. The number who trianed in Cuba continued to decrease.
