Though a relatively small percentage of IMGs attended medical school in Africa (5.5% or 10,169 in 2001), those IMGs nonetheless represent a large proportion of the medical work-force in many African nations. Such immigration trends result in relatively high rates of brain-drain from poor African countries. According to the 2001 data, most IMGs who trained in Africa attened medical school in Egypt (43%), Nigeria (21%), and South Africa (20%).
