In 1986 large numbers of IMGs had attended medical school in Italy, and England. Though many IMGs had trained in Switzerland and Germany as well, there were fewer in 1986 than 1981 from those country. By contrast, the number who trained in the USSR increased.
The United States has traditionally drawn a large number of IMGs from schools in Europe. While the number of IMGs who attended schools in Europe has increased over the past 20 years, they represent a declining percentage of the total number of IMGs.

Between 1986 and 1991 the number of IMGs who trained in Italy continued to increase while the number who trained in Germany and Switzerland continued to decrease. The number who trained in Spain, Ireland, and the United Kingdom also increased.
Between 1991 and 1996 the number of IMGs who trained in the former USSR increased sharply (probably due to improved relations with the US after the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991). Similarly, the number who trained in Poland and Romania increased signficantly. The number who trained in Switzerland and Germany continued to fall.
Between 1996 and 2001 the number of IMGs who trained in the former Soviet Union continued to increase dramatically. The number who trained in Germany increased for the first time in 20 years (probably due to reunification). The number who trained in Poland and Romania continued to increase while the number who trained in Switzerland continued to drop.
