Between 1981 and 2001 the total number of IMGs working in the United States grew from 93,596 to 183,968. Most of the increase came from schools located in Mexico, the Caribbean, India, and the Philippines.

The number of IMGs from medical schools in Germany, Cuba, and Switzerland decreased significantly between 1981 and 1986. By contrast, the number who attended medical school in India, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, Grenada, and Montserrat increased significantly.
Between 1986 and 1991, the number of IMGs who trained in Cuba, Swizerland and Germany continued to fall. Following the same trend, the number who attended medical school in India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic continued to grow. In addition, a significantly larger number of IMGs arrrived from USSR, Syria, Egypt, Grenada, and Nigeria.
Between 1991 and 1996, the number of IMGs who trained in Cuba, Switzerland, and Germany continued to drop. Austria and Italy also sent fewer IMGs to the US during that five-year span. India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia, and Nigeria continued to send increasing numbers. A larger number of IMGs arrived from China during that five-year interval, as well.
From 1996 to 2001, Swizerland, and Cuba continued to send fewer IMGs; the number arrriving from Korea also dropped considerably. During that interval, a large number arrived from India, Pakistan, China, Russia (and countries in the former USSR), Grenada, Dominica, and Montserrat.
