VIREX Anti-Virus Protection

Virex protects your Macintosh whether you are downloading files from the Internet or copying files from a diskette or server. It provides Scan-At-Download, scheduled scanning, extensive network protection, instant updating, native Power Macintosh support and compressed file scanning, including StuffIt, Compact Pro and ZIP archives.

To obtain a copy of the Virex software, go to the UW site licenses page here:

Alternatively, find the same software on FirstClass (Information Resources conference --> Software Downloads).

For some good background information on virus protection provided by C&C, go here:

UPDATING VIRUS DEFINITIONS

Virex can be updated to detect and repair new viruses by applying Virus Update files. New viruses are discovered daily, so it is important to update Virex frequently. This update can be accomplished either manually or according to a set schedule. The virus definition file should be updated immediately after installing the application for the first time!

Manual update instructions:
(1.) Launch the Virex application. Look for the Virex application folder on the Macintosh HD (root level) or launch via the Control Strip module.
(2.) Click "eUpdate" from the toolbar.

Scheduling updates:
(1.) Launch the Virex application. Look for the Virex application folder on the Macintosh HD (root level) or launch via the Control Strip module.
(2.) Select "Edit Schedule..." from the Schedule menu.
(3.) Choose "eUpdate" from the first pull-down menu.
(4.) Choose "After Startup" from the third pull-down menu.
(5.) Click "Add" to schedule the event.
(6.) Click "Save".

SCHEDULING VIRUS SCANS

(1.) Launch the Virex application. Look for the Virex application folder on the Macintosh HD (root level) or launch via the Control Strip module.
(2.) Select "Edit Schedule..." from the Schedule menu.
(3.) Choose "Diagnose" from the first pull-down menu.
(4.) Choose "All Local Disks" from the second pull-down menu.
(5.) Choose "Before Shutdown" from the third pull-down menu.
(6.) Click "Add" to schedule the event.
(7.) Click "Save".

MANUAL VIRUS SCANS

(1.) Launch the Virex application. Look for the Virex application folder on the Macintosh HD (root level) or launch via the Control Strip module.
(2.) Click "Diagnose" from the toolbar (this operation may take several minutes).
(3.) When the operation has completed, read the summary report. If a virus was detected, follow the provided instructions to repair or disinfect the found virus. If any concerns arise from the generated report, print a copy and call Computer Support for assistance.
