Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Elective

Faculty Advisor:    Jorge Garcia, MD

This elective will provide senior residents with additional experience in outpatient evaluation and treatment of orthopedic and sports related conditions.  Residents need to review this elective with their advisor and generate a final schedule at least 2 months prior to the first date of the elective.  Residents will need to maintain their continuity clinic and participation in didactics and other regularly scheduled meetings.  The below template has a vetted and well rated option for each half day not already scheduled with continuity clinics or other obligations.

Once the schedule is finalized, ideally 2 months prior to the start of the elective, it needs to be forwarded to all the teachers below along with the resident’s contact information, to confirm availability.

Comments: *Belfie's first patient of the morning is at 8:00am. He normally gets here around 7:45am. If the residents wanted to show up around 7:45 they could be included in our "morning huddle" where we go over the days schedule and anticipate any x-rays or special needs. But if they show up as little later that would be no problem. his last patient of the morning is at 11:30/11:45.

Dr. Belfie agreed to one resident for one half day each week.  He sees patients in clinic all day Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  He is already on the regular schedule for our residents in the R2 Orthopedic rotation.  Residents doing this Sports Medicine Elective on a block without a R2 on Ortho should plan to work every Friday morning with Dr. Belfie.  Otherwise, special communication will be required between Dr. Garcia and Dr. Belfie to request additional teaching days.  Dr. Belfie has among the highest ratings of all our outside attendings.
