Area of Concentration in Gynecology
Faculty Director: Paul Gianutsos, M.D., M.P.H.
Introduction
The Swedish Family Medicine Residency Program Cherry Hill emphasizes the importance of serving underserved communities. The residency offers advanced training in select gynecologic procedures for family medicine residents in order to ensure the availability of these procedures in communities that lack services. Our residency has established faculty expertise in the area of colposcopy, LEEP, cryotherapy and medical and surgical abortion. We have established a specialized track in Gynecology to provide residents with broader and deeper training in this area, with an emphasis on using these skills in medically underserved populations.
Objectives
The Gynecology Track is designed to provide motivated residents opportunities to:
Learn more in depth about cervical cancer screening and treatment of HPV related disease
Be proficient in LEEP and cryotherapy of the cervix
Be proficient in medical and surgical abortion procedures
Be proficient in ultrasound dating of first trimester pregnancy
Application Requirements
Because of limited availability of spaces for this rotation, residents will be selected based on their past demonstrated interest in Gynecology and the likelihood that they will use the skills acquired in their future practice. Residents must complete a short essay explaining their interest in Gynecology and meet the following requirements in order to be considered:
Must be in good standing
Must be on track to graduate with adequate outpatient clinic visits and obstetrical continuity deliveries
Requirements for Completion of the Gynecology Track
In order to successfully complete the Gynecology Track residents must
Complete the required Gynecology rotation
Complete two Gynecology elective rotations, one of which must be an abortion rotation at an approved high volume abortion clinic (see below)
Complete the online reading curriculum on important topics in Gynecology.
Perform satisfactorily in the Gynecology rotations.
Prepare and present a final project.
Gynecology Electives
The Gynecology rotation is a required part of the R2 year. Electives may be completed in the R2 and R3 years. These may be designed with the assistance of the Gynecology faculty. Approved high volume abortion sites include Planned Parenthood clinics in Seattle and Everett, Aurora Women’s Clinic and Aradia.
The second elective may be designed around your particular interests but must be approved no less than 30 days in advance of the start of the rotation by the Gynecology Track coordinator. The Gynecology faculty can assist you in site selection and planning for rotations.
Gynecology Track- Reading Curriculum
This curriculum is designed to provide a sampling of pertinent and interesting articles covering important topics in Gynecology. These readings supplement the required readings of the Gynecology rotation.
All of these readings are available online. Some require the use of your UW Net ID.
See the Gynecology Website for a list of readings.

Final Presentation
After completing the curriculum readings and the elective rotations, the final requirement of the track is to prepare a verbal or written presentation on a topic of interest to you in the field of Gynecology. In most cases, this should be a formal presentation, given as an R3 talk or in another appropriate forum.
Your topic should focus on a specific type of gynecologic disorder, a specific geographic region or community, a specific population, or any other area of interest that arose from your readings and electives.
In addition, you must complete an evaluation form for any off site elective experience. This is to help guide future residents in their selection of sites, as well as to help the faculty get a better impression of your experience.
