Visiting Resident Rotation in Addiction Medicine

This month-long rotation, designed to increase the Family Medicine Resident's ability to manage detoxification, addiction, and chronic non-malignant pain disorders is administered by the Swedish Family Medicine Residency Program at Cherry Hill in Seattle , Washington.

During the rotation residents will care for patients with a broad spectrum of addiction, pain and psychiatric disorders. The majority of the resident's time is spent at the Addiction Recovery Service, a 30-bed inpatient unit at the Ballard campus of Swedish Medical center in Seattle . There are currently 16 beds for detoxification from alcohol, benzodiazepines and opiates. There are 12 beds for substance using pregnant women. The resident will also rotate through a chronic pain clinic, a methadone maintenance treatment center, chemical dependency treatment centers for adults and adolescents and will visit local NA and AA meetings.  Time can also be arranged to evaluate outpatients receiving buprenorphine maintenance therapy in the family medicine clinic. Faculty supervisors are Board Certified Family Medicine physicians and are all certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Society for Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
