1. After resident has examined the patient, a decision is made by the resident to choose one of the following interactions:

a) No faculty consult needed. (Note: This is not an option for R-1's, who are to review all of their cases with a faculty through block 7.) precept all patients through block 7.

b) Ask faculty for answers to specific question/s (i.e., use faculty as an information source).

c) Ask faculty to work through difficult problem patient after presentation of pertinent history and physical findings.

d) Ask faculty to see patient and confirm physical finding/assist in procedure.

e) Ask faculty to demonstrate management or procedural technique (faculty as model).

f) Ask faculty to observe interpersonal exchange or procedure and give feedback.

g) Ask faculty to evaluate proposed management plan.

2. In situations where faculty person enters the room to observe:

a) The resident introduces the faculty person to patient and explains the function of this consultant.

b) The faculty person remains to one side as much as possible - out of the area of the resident/patient interaction.

c) The patient is asked to wait a few minutes; the resident and the faculty person will leave to discuss findings and plans.

d) The resident returns and presents the plan to the patient. The faculty person may be present to reinforce the plan to the patient, if indicated.

e) The faculty and the resident review what has been accomplished and discuss future management at a convenient time after the patient leaves.
