Areas of Concentration

In order to offer advanced training in areas of medicine which are of particular interest to Family Physicians, we have developed several enhanced curricular options for our residents. We have added four Areas of Concentration (AOCs) in Obstetrics, Psychiatry, International Medicine and Wilderness Medicine.  An additional AOC in Sports Medicine is currently being developed. These tracks offer our residents opportunities to augment their learning in specific areas of Family Medicine. Residents who elect an AOC will complete the outlined curriculum, gaining expertise and advanced skills geared for use in their future practices.

To acknowledge the added expertise gained by these curricular tracks, the resident will receive a letter of recognition from the AOC coordinator. The Program Director will also recognize the resident’s additional training in the resident’s Graduate Summary letter.

Please refer to these new AOCs for the template curriculums. We hope these enhancements will continue our tradition of excellence in training Family Medicine Residents.

The obstetrics area of concentration at Swedish Family Medicine Residency provides additional training in normal and high-risk obstetrics.

Residents work one month at a time in both their second and third years with an obstetrician selected as an exceptional teacher. They preround hospital visits and perform or assist all procedures that the obstetrician does in the hospital for that month.

In addition, residents concentrating in Obstetrics participate in 16 teaching conferences in advanced obstetrics in a longitudinal fashion throughout the year. Relevant portions of Williams and Gabbe texts in obstetrics, ACOG practice bulletins, Up-to-date monographs, and current journal articles are reviewed to expand the residents' obstetric fund of knowledge.

The International Health AOC is an exciting new collaborative project between the two Swedish Family Medicine residencies-- First Hill and Providence.  During the R3 year, residents who pursue the International Health AOC spend a one month elective working as a physician in a hospital and/or clinic setting in an

established Swedish Family Medicine site in a developing country. Current sites are in Kenya, Nicaragua and Peru, and other sites are in development. During the R2 year and R3 years, the resident will additionally attend all of the International Medicine Seminars held 10 months out of each year. Finally, each resident will prepare a paper or presentation, using the seminars, additional readings and the overseas rotation to help address a significant topic in international health.
