Maureen
Brown, M.D.
Medical Director, DFM
I
joined the Swedish Family Medicine faculty in October 1996 as medical
director of the Downtown Family Medicine clinic. After medical school at
the University of Chicago and a family practice residency at the
University of Iowa, I worked for two years at a small rural hospital in
the Appalachias of southeastern Kentucky. My experiences in this job
sparked a growing interest in epidemiology and in public health practice.
After six more years at a community health center in northern California
and two fascinating years with the Indian Health Service in southwestern
Alaska, my desire for further training in public health and preventive
medicine led me to the University of Washington. I have recently completed
the Preventive Medicine Residency program, received my MPH degree in
epidemiology, and finished a two year post-doctoral fellowship in cancer
prevention and control at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
These past two years have given me a new hope and expanded perspective on
the practice of medicine, which I hope I can share with the family
medicine residents.
