Karen
James, M.D.
Faculty Physician
Karen
took her time getting to medicine. Originally inspired to become a doctor
by M*A*S*H’s irascible but dedicated Hawkeye Pearce, Karen followed her
dream of becoming a doctor until college. Seduced by the alluring stories
of people’s lives found throughout history, she received her BA in
history from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. After
graduation she worked for The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum
of American History caring for the artifacts of our nation’s past.
However, she soon realized she missed the stories which shaped people’s
lives and health. Returning to her dream of being a physician, she
completed her post-baccalaureate studies and medical school at The
University of Washington. Karen joined the faculty in 2002 after
graduating from the Swedish Family Medicine residency. She has enjoyed the
challenge of honing her teaching skills through daily interactions with
residents and completion of the University of Washington’s Faculty
Development Fellowship in 2004. Driven by the desire to make Swedish
Family Medicine the best clinic to work at she became Medical Director in
2004. Karen has a special interest in pediatric obesity and loves caring
for women, especially providing colposcopy and LEEP. Born and raised in
beautiful Washington State, Karen loves the Pacific Northwest. An avid
hiker and backpacker, she finds particular joy in sharing the beauty of
the rugged North Cascades, soaring Mount Rainer and frigid Puget Sound
with her husband David and daughter Ella. She also enjoys biking to work,
working in her garden, and acting in Ella’s innumerable pretend
weddings. |
