Ian Kenning, M.D.
University of Iowa - Carver College
The son of two public school
teachers, Ian was born and raised in Ottumwa, Iowa. Though his first high
school aptitude test told Ian that he should become a hairdresser, luckily
he opted instead to study Biology at Iowa State University. The pursuit of
medicine came from a partnership between his interest in the life science,
and his enjoyment of working with people. AT the University of Iowa medical
school (sense an Iowa-theme here?) Ian quickly became interested in Family
Medicine, as he was drawn to the breadth of its scope, as well as the
emphasis on whole person healing. During medical school at the University of
Iowa, Ian has had numerous opportunities to work with the medically
underserved, and plans to maintain his passion for such work in residency
and beyond. Additionally, Ian is interested in complimentary and alternative
medicine, sports medicine, and even has a desire to one-day end up teaching.
Outside of medicine, Ian enjoys listening to, playing, and creating music of
all kinds. During medical school, Ian helped found a medical student drum
circle "SPITATGOATS" (Smacking Percussion in the Attempt to Groove Out All
Tension and Stress), co-hosted jam sessions in the home of the Iowa
colleague/now Swedish colleague, Greg Parker, and played in a local band. As
a couple of outdoor lovers and native Midwesterners, Ian and his wife Nicole
are excited to explore the myriad opportunities the Pacific Northwest has to
offer.
