Patient Care

The ophthalmologic examination

Recognize and manage ophthalmologic emergencies

Treat corneal trauma, superficial foreign bodies

Demonstrate clear communication with patient regarding their medical issues in a culturally sensitive manner

Demonstrate a high degree of professional responsibility in managing patients with Ophthalmology-related problems by referral coordination, direct management and follow up.

The resident should develop attitudes that encompass:

A supportive and compassionate approach to the care of the patient with ocular disease, especially in the case of someone with deteriorating vision.

Recognition of the effects of loss of visual function.

Recognition of the importance of the role of support systems in the health of patients with ocular disease.

Understanding of the role of the ophthalmic consultant, including identifying the different roles of ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians.

 

Practice-Based Learning

Assess the practice models on this rotations for evidence of practice-based learning and identify opportunities that would be appropriate for the this medical area.

Identify a learning opportunity within your clinic practice that could be studied to improve the care for patient with Ophthalmology-related problems.

 

Systems-Based Practice

Learn how to access the appropriate services for patients with Ophthalmology-related problems and the impact of utilization management for these patients.

Demonstrate understanding of the role of the PCP in the immediate and after-care of patients with Ophthalmology-related diagnoses.
