Psychiatry Area Of Concentration

Coordinator: Dr. Carol Cordy

The goal of this area of concentration is to increase experience and skills in diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders in a primary care setting.

Components:

 1. One four week elective block of inpatient psychiatry at Harborview Medical Center - working with one of the psychiatry teams - admitting patients, rounding with the team, discussing patients’ diagnosis, treatment, discharge planning.

 2. Observation at the Children's Hospital Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, rounding with youth, their parents, and the interdisciplinary team.  Contact Chris Varley, MD at cvarley@u.washington.edu.

 3. Shadowing of child psychiatry fellows and psychologists through Children's Hospital outpatient psychiatry clinic.

 4. Work with the psychiatric consult service at Swedish Medical Center First Hill. Contact Martin Johnson, MD at 206-215-3650.

 5. Work with Geropsychiatrist, Dr. Tom Patamia, at Highline Specialty Center. Contact him at 206-248-4720, tpatamia@highlinemedical.org.

 6. Shadow UW Psychiatry attendings and residents at the outpatient psychiatric crisis intervention facility run by Harborview Medical Center.

 7. Attend weekly psychiatry didactics with University of Washington Psychiatry residents when possible during second and third years of residency. Topics include pitfalls of antidepressants and antipsychotics, (2-4hours weekly available).

 8. Monthly Friday Psychiatry Case Conferences at Swedish Family Medicine.

 9. Consultation with Swedish Family Medicine staff consulting psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Vincent as needed on clinic patients.

 10. Independent reading based on interest/patients seen in clinic.

 11. Workshops by community psychiatrists and psychologists on diagnosis, treatment, brief therapy (20 hours/year - in planning stages).
