Description:

R2’s and R3’s would be shadowed for a period of two days once per year.  R1’s would not be shadowed in this format due to the demands of their schedules.  On the first day of the pairing, the resident would first accompany the faculty member as they engaged the normal activities of their day.  The days have been randomly selected to allow for variation in the activities seen.  It is hoped that the resident will observe committee meetings, precepting, clinic sessions, lunch meetings, administrative time, volunteering as well as clinic half days.

On the second day, the faculty will accompany the resident on their assigned duties.  Again, the days have been randomly chosen to allow for variation in the activities witnessed.

In preparation, the faculty and resident would meet in the week before their session.  They could outline resident specific objectives for the session.  For example, a resident might want particular attention paid to their efficiency in clinic, their patient centered interviewing technique, or to their billing practices.  The overall goals of the experience could also be reviewed.

At the end of the two day session, the faculty member would be expected to write a narrative report, using the ACGME core competencies and the residents stated objectives as a guide.  The report would be forwarded to the resident’s advisor who would review it at the time of the next quarterly.
