Cognitive Skills:

§         Knowledge and understanding of the major indications for obstetrical ultrasound

§         Knowledge of the timing of obstetrical ultrasound for diagnostic purposes.

§         Knowledge of biometric parameters being measured and what information is gained by each examination.

§         Interpretation of reported data and understanding of its reliability.

§         Understanding of ultrasound uses in the management of high-risk pregnancies such as Class A diabetes, chronic hypertension, IUGR, post-dates, etc.

§         Understanding of basic physics and components of ultrasound machine.

§         Understanding of basic medico-legal features of limited ultrasound.


Procedural Skills:


First Trimester:

1. Ability to detect gestational sac, yolk sac, fetal pole, and cardiac activity in 1st trimester using vaginal probe, and estimate gestational age (Crown-rump, sac).

2.  Rule in an intrauterine gestation (rule out Ectopic).


Second Trimester:

1.  Ability to assess EGA by head and abdominal circumference, femur 1 (one) length.

2.  Understand the elements of an anatomic survey.


Third Trimester:

1. Ability to locate fetal position/presentation/number.

2. Ability to locate placenta and grade.

3. Ability to locate cardiac motion.

4. Ability to assess amniotic fluid volume.

5. Ability to assess biophysical profile.
