I. Goals
of the Course
A. Encourage
students who are interested in careers in a rural
community. Promote careers in rural communities.
B. Impart
information concerning issues and trends in rural
communities. Learn to identify what is fact and what is
perception.
C. Expose
the students to successful rural practitioners.
D. Develop
cross-cultural awareness.
E. Encourage
students to learn about disciplines other than their own through getting to
know students from other disciplines.
II. Career
Recruitment
A. Individuals
from the SPARX Steering Committee will follow-up with interested students
concerning career plans.
B. Students
will be guided to summer (or permanent) work opportunities in rural
communities.
III. Publicity
A. A
representative from each health sciences school will take responsibility for
publicizing this course in his or her school.
B. Family
Medicine will make available flyers for bulletin boards.
C. As
a member of the SPARX family of student programs, the course will be publicized
via SPARX.
IV. Course Particulars
A. Peter
House and Amy Hagopian will coordinate the class with administrative assistance
from Joyce Kirk of the Program Office of the WWAMI Area Health Education
Center. Peter will introduce outside
speakers and will be in attendance at each class session.
B. Requirements
1. Students
must attend at least seven classes. We
will attempt to videotape classes for students who have a conflict with another
school activity.
2. Students must participate in a field
trip.
3. Students
are required to complete readings prior to each class session. Most of the readings will be from Textbook of Rural Medicine, edited by
Geyman, Norris, and Hart, 2001. Other
readings will be passed out in class from time to time.
4. Students
must turn in a questionnaire during the second class session.
5. Students must obtain a UW e-mail
address.
C. Field
Trip
1. There
will be an organized group field trip with guide(s) from the coordinating
committee. Students must attend this
field trip, or organize their own trip.
2.
Field trip
options:
a. Attend
the group field trip to Leavenworth and Wenatchee on Saturday February 2, 2001.
b. Attend
one of the SPARX field trips during the 2000 - 2001 school year.
c. Plan a customized field trip
— Course coordinators will assist with
arrangements
— Requires a brief written report
D. Evaluations
An
end-of-course evaluation will be distributed to all participants for feedback
to guide improvements for next year’s class.
