Family Medicine Residency Selection & Career Advising
First Steps

The UW Affiliated Network of Family Practice Residencies (the "Network") includes 15 residency programs in the WWAMI region. In addition, there are 500 or more family practice programs throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Information about family practice residencies can be obtained in a number of ways:

  • Many programs now have their own Web sites. Click here to access the WWAMI "Network"programs.
  • AAFP Directory of Family Practice Residencies - several copies are available in E-304; also the HS Library and FREIDA
  • Other related publications on career choice, including:

Written materials
The Residency Interview. A Guide for Medical Students. AMA Women in Medicine Project. This pamphlets describes the typical interview and lists both commonly and uncommonly asked questions, gender-based questions, and questions to ask during interviews. 16 pp.

Taylor AD. How to Choose a Medical Specialty. 2nd Ed., Philadelphia, W.B. Saunders, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1993. 275 pp.

Glaxo Medical Specialty Profiles. Glaxo Wellcome, Research Triangle Park, 1996. 578 pp.

Strolling Through the Match The American Academy of Family Physicians publishes a rich list of resources and references, with updated information about ERAS. It is a good general reference, even for students not interested in family medicine. Paper copies can be obtained from the AAFP at 1-800-274-2237 ext. 5224.

Videotapes (from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP):

"Family Practice--A Specialty for Our Time".

"This Tuesday--The Diversity, Involvement, and Flexibility of a Career in Family Practice."

"National Congress of Family Practice Residents and National Congress of Student Members."

For more information. Feel free to call 206-543-9425 or email us if you are a UW student seeking additional career advice. We would be happy to put you in touch with a faculty member to discuss your questions. We also encourage you to speak with faculty members in the community whom you come in contact with during preceptorships and rotations. Family physicians representing most of the numerous career opportunities open to you are available to help you with your career issues.

The UW Dean of Student Affairs office has developed a general introduction to the National Residency Match Program (the "Match"). This information is available at the Residency Selection Forum held each May for new fourth students. You may also find information in the HealthLinks Student Toolkit under "Medical Students" or check out a national database with reviews from many residency programs.

More information is available from the The National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) and the American Association of Medical Colleges (MedCareers), including information about Electronic Residency Application (ERAS). Almost all family medicine residency placement occurs through ERAS. The AMA also provides information about the residency selection process.
