Programs and Courses

Faculty Integrative Health Program - FIHP
This program is open to faculty from all schools of health sciences. During the year we will explore integrative health practices and the evidence that exists for them. We will introduce the underlying theoretical basis for these modalities, and will include experiential components to each session. Applications are sent out electronically and are due in the Spring. Please keep in mind that space is limited. Participants will be notified by Summer of their acceptance.

The Mind-Body skills selective - UCONJ 531
This multidisciplinary course teaches multiple techniques of self-care to early medical and graduate nursing students. By learning and applying these techniques, it is anticipated that future care providers can reduce their own dissatisfaction, prevent burnout and therefore provide better care for their patients.  They will be made more aware of the mind-body connection and be armed with skills that they can then teach their patients.

Clinical Elective in CAM - FAMED 675P
Fourth year medical students rotate at the same time through four successive weekly clinical placements with CAM providers in Seattle - chiropractor, naturopathic physician, acupuncturist, and massage therapist (38 hours/week). Students will learn how alternative health care practitioners understand and explain to patients the dynamic between health and disease and the relationship between mind, body, and spirit.

Fundamentals of Hypnosis for beginners
Hypnosis has been recognized as a therapeutic tool by the American Medical Association since 1968. Since that time it has been conclusively shown that hypnosis is an effective therapeutic tool in the management of a variety of clinical conditions.  The focus of this elective will be on developing beginner skills in hypnosis for medical and other graduate students in the health professions so it can be used safely and appropriately.

Spirituality in Medicine - FAMED 547 / MHE 518
This interdisciplinary course includes medical, nursing, and social work students. Students learn about assessing and integrating spirituality into professional practice. Emphasizes small group and experiential learning

Alternate Approaches to Healing - MHE 501
The subject will be explored through presentations by practitioners of acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy, hypnotherapy, massage therapy, mind-body medicine, and naturopathic medicine. Class sessions will also be devoted to questions of evaluation of efficacy of unconventional treatments, and models for integrating complementary and conventional practice.

CAM Nursing Certificate Program
The School of Nursing now offers an 18-credit graduate certificate in Complementary and Alternative Medicine/Healthcare (CAM): An Integrative Approach. Graduates of this certificate program will be prepared as integrative healthcare specialists in serving all patient populations.
